Margery gave every section of road a number. 45(a) runs between Winchester and Salisbury.
Beyond Salisbury 45(b) goes on to the Roman lead mines at Charterhouse in the Mendip hills. Beyond Winchester 42(b) leads to a Roman port at Bitterne in Southampton.
In 1783 a Roman lead ingot weighting 156lb was found in the River Test where 45(a) crosses. It is known as the Broughton pig and is now in the British museum.
